Day and Night – (verbal vocal, concept piece, jazz harmony)

I spent a long time honing navigation of the chords of the middle 8 of Night and Day by Cole Porter. There are many semitone/tone sliding notes that needed careful attention not to make the sound muddy…  I was at the time rehearsing a number of jazz standards with a guitarist and was struck by the density of the accidentals in this passage…

The words are adjectives taken from one BBC News bulletin.. I separated out all the adjectives and divided the negative ones from the positive ones.

I begin with all 13 of the negative words using an angular descent, but remaining within the harmony of the passage of harmony below…

I then improvised for a while and once far enough away from the original melody, then i sing the 4 positive words and at the end i reveal the lyric “this torment won’t be through, til you let me spend my life making love to you.. Night and Day”

The idea is to describe the polarity of adjectives (which are generally subjective), which pollute our thoughts each time we watch the news, consuming vastly more negative than positive affirmations in the form of descriptions of nouns.
